Revised writing strengths and weaknesses

In life all writers have strengths and weaknesses, whether your a professional or an amateur. Some people have more strengths then weaknesses while others have more weaknesses then strengths. When writing, I tend to come up with a strong thesis statement and get my thoughts out but I have no organization or detail and I struggle with the length.
When writing a paper people have to realize there are different types of writing. Depending upon what type of writing it is, my strengths or weaknesses are magnified. For example, in free writing I can get my ideas down on the paper no matter what order they go in.  In formal writing its hard for me to get my point across or even get to the point. Sometimes I tend to put useless information into a paper or go on and on about nothing.
On the other hand, I can come up with strong thesis statements. I know how to state my opinion or position in the beginning, but its hard to support it though the entire paper. I've been told I don't use enough detail which may be the reason I have a hard time completing the assigned amount to write. An example of this is when I'm assigned something like a ten page research paper. I don't have enough information about the topic to fill up ten pages. I feel like I just run out of things to say especially if I'm not passionate about the topic or know little to nothing about it.
With all this being said, I would like to become a better writer or at least lessen some of my writing weaknesses. First, I would definitely want to make my writing interesting. I want the readers to enjoy my writing and be eager to read more papers I write. I am a creative person and I like doodling or decorating things. However, I don't know yet how to transfer that creativity to my writing. Also I would like to become a faster writer, I tend to take longer to complete a paper than the average student. Along with writing faster I would like to get better at organizing my essays and making it lengthier. Throughout this semester and or school year I hope to accomplish all of these goals and become a decent writer.

  1. I hope I'll be able to help you accomplish your writing goals.

Here are a few suggestions to begin. First, read your paper out loud. That way, you'll be able to hear places in your writing that need work. You will find your voice stumbling when you read over problematic writing. You will also find places where your voice pauses; often, but not always, this is where commas go.

Avoid generalizations, eliminating words like everyone, all, people, etc. Instead, be specific. For example, you write, "When writing a paper people have to realize there are different types of writing." Who are these people? What types of writing are you talking about? Because this paper is about you, you may want to stick with using "I." You could change "people" to "I" and tell your reader that you have to realize there are different types of writing such as formal, informal, etc.

Please don't hesitate to come and talk to me about any of your writing questions/concerns.
