Revised: My Weaknesses Can Be My Strength

Many people in the United States of America have been writing since kindergarten, some even before they reach that grade level. In my experience, writing is never easy even though I have done it for a long time. I have to be able to put my ideas and observations on the paper, while also making it interesting and well written. Writing helps me express my ideas and share those ideas with the reader. Writing does take a lot of concentration, thought, and imagination but it is something I can improve with practice. Although I do have strengths and weaknesses when it comes to writing, practice can improve my weaknesses and allow myself to become a better writer.
Writing is not my passion. I prefer to be the reader rather than the writer, but when it comes down to writing I do have a few strengths that help me out. One of my strengths is being able to analyze and look at the deeper meaning of the text. Analyzing helps me look at the different angles of things and express them to the reader in my writing. I can break down every idea and discuss the significance of each idea. Along with analyzing, another strength I have is that I am able to elaborate on a topic. When writing an essay, this is very helpful because I can take one idea or subject and talk about every single concept that is part of the idea. Another strength is that I can give great commentary and show the reader what I think and how I reached those thoughts. I think this is very important because as a writer you have to put your ideas and thoughts about the topic in your writing.
When it comes to writing I do have a couple strengths that help me but I also have weaknesses that hinder my writing skills. Grammar really effects my writing because I have a hard time knowing when to use a comma and other punctuation. When I am given a writing assignment I have a lot of difficulty if I do not have detail prompt for the essay I have to write. I need to know what will be the structure of my essay; this is why I do a lot of outlines for essays or any kind of writing assignment I need to complete. Creating good attention grabbers also gives me a difficult time. I love reading great attention grabbers that pull me in to read more. But, when it comes to creating them I have not idea what to do. What really impedes me from writing a good hook is the thought that others may not find my hook interesting. This idea gets stuck in my head making me double think every attention grabber I create. Even though I have many weaknesses when it comes to writing, I believe that I can improve and mold all my weaknesses into strengths.
In this English class my goal is to enjoy writing more and challenge myself. I want to leave my comfort zone of writing five paragraph essays, and explore new ways to write. I also want to be more creative in the way I write. I think reaching these goals will take a lot of desire and time, but I will achieve them. My biggest goal is to love being the writing as much as I love being the reader.

  1. Analytical (critical thinking) skills are paramount to being a good writer. If you use these skills when you approach a writing topic, you're halfway there. I understand that thinking and writing are two different things; however, clear thinkers can easily become clear writers.

Part of clear writing is being able to organize your thoughts. One thing that strikes me about your writing is your sense of logical organization.

We'll work more on developing your paragraphs with specific examples and moving from general or abstract thinking/writing to more concrete thinking/writing.
