Revised: Me as a Writer

Edward Tufte, an American statistician and professor at Yale University, once stated that the point of the essay is to change things.  In this essay I would like to change the way I right.  As writer, I am good at brainstorming, effectively communicating and researching; however, my essays are short and don’t go into enough detail.  In the future I hope to become a better writer through the use of good grammar and structure in my essays.
Strengths are a key component when examining yourself; it’s what shapes you as a writer.  Brainstorming has always been as easy as thinking for me; I can usually fill my essays with thoughts and ideas.  Communication is a huge part of writing, in my opinion; it’s what allows you to effectively get your point across to whoever your intended audience is.  When it comes to researching topics or people, I find that I do well, because I’m more analytical than creative.
Weaknesses, Although hard to admit, are a great part of determining what makes you a good writer, because weaknesses that are overcome make for great stories, and can make you a better writer.  I find that me essays are always short, I attribute that to the fact that I don’t really know what else to add to my essays aside from the facts, evidence, or quotes that are provided or gathered from research.  Another problem is that when I do go into details my teachers tell me I’m not going into enough detail, and I want to be able to learn how to create a paper with more depth.
Goals, in my opinion are determined from your weaknesses, and how you can turn them in to strengths.   My main goal is to know what the appropriate essay structure is for the type of paper I’m writing.  I also want to develop a better vocabulary and write an essay with good grammar, because I feel that would make me the best writer I could be.  I also want to know how to cite my sources properly, because plagiarism isn't something I wish to accomplish while I'm in College.

Overall I want to walk away from this Expository Writing class a better writer.  The way I will accomplish that is by relying on my strengths, building on my weaknesses and reaching my goals.

  1. Malon,
Overall, you seem to have a well-organized essay. Work on proofreading your work. A little polish can go a long way.

During the course of the semester, we'll talk about developing your ideas, which was one of the concerns you mention above. Using specific examples and concrete language (versus abstract language) will help you create fully-developed paragraphs.
